Baby's Precious Milestones

Your new baby has just arrived. If this is your first baby, of course you are curious as when to expect the baby’s first smile, first word and first tooth. Surely, you have read countless books to chart out when to expect all of the baby’s precious milestones. This article is dedicated to us new mommies and daddies that love to follow milestone timetables. Of course, no two babies are the same and all babies develop at different paces. These developmental stages are approximate guidelines for you to consider.

One to Nine Months

  • Baby responds to sounds and turns in the direction of the sound
  • Mimics vowel sounds
  • Coos and babbles
  • Baby can pull himself up on furniture
  • Baby begins to dance

    Nine to Eighteen Months

  • Baby is able to walk
  • Drink from a sippy cup
  • Scribble with crayons
  • Baby can understand approximately 50 words

    Eighteen to Thirty Six Months

  • Baby can sort items by color and size
  • Learns the concept of sharing and taking turns
  • Develops gross motor skills such as kicking a ball
  • Baby can speak three to four word sentences

Again, these guidelines simply describe just a few of baby’s wonderful milestones. They serve as a guideline to help determine if your new baby has any developmental delays. In my own case, following guidelines such as these helped me determine that my daughter had motor skill problems that needed attention from her pediatrician.

Be sure to know approximately when your new baby should reach their milestones. Record them in a baby memory book, medical journal or scrapbook. Doing so can help you address any concerns that may arise. Recording them will also give you a wonderful memory of your new baby’s fascinating journey through life. Remember, your new baby is a unique individual and will develop at his own pace. If you have any concerns speak to your pediatrician or family practitioner and she will be able to relieve any concerns you may have. Your new baby is growing more and more every day. Cherish each moment you have with them because they grow so fast. Look forward to each and every milestone they accomplish. Celebrate them every day with daddy and other family members. Continue to record your new baby’s milestones long after they have reached the milestones in this timetable. Your child will continue to amaze you everyday with the things they accomplish and learn. Create a journal of all of your thoughts during your new baby’s life. Have a record of when they reach their precious milestones and they will be able to compare your list to when their children reach their develomental milestones.

Follow the simple tips and refer regularly to the milestone guidelines listed above. Doing so will ensure you and your new baby are off to a healthy and happy start!
