Long before a baby understands any words, he is learning about the particular rhythms and inflections of the language spoken around him. Don't be embarrassed if you find yourself talking to your baby with exaggerated inflections and facial expressions; you're not imitating your mother but doing what makes your baby dance with delight when the two of you "talk" together. Picture books promote this sort of interaction between parent and child. They help your baby to connect meaning with the sounds of your voice, and they give the two of your something to talk about. To a baby, the sounds of television, radio, and adult conversation are background noise. Children learn by doing, and this is as true in their linguistic development as in other areas. Given a picture book and a patient parent, the baby can practice his language skills. As the two of you point and exclaim, he is learning to concentrate, to comprehend and to express himself. And as he connects the picture of the dog with the word dog and the barking critter in the neighbor's yard, he is beginning to value books as learning tools. He is also learning to associate books with comfort. When the two of you sit down with a picture book or a baby memory book, the baby gets a cuddle and all your attention. With repetition a pattern is set: Your child will probably be finding both solace and stimulation in books for the rest of his life. You may argue that looking at picture books isn't really reading. You're right--most babies wouldn't sit still while their parents paged through a book reading all the printed words. No matter--let the books be playthings now. Soon enough your child will be begging you to read, really read, for hours on end, and then, one day, reading on his own.
